P015 → Introspection Charm

In Chinese flower arrangement, literati used flowers as symbols of virtue, arranging them as a form of self-cultivation. This wearable object translates that practice into a contemporary form: placing a flower becomes choosing a virtue for the day, and carrying it becomes a system of daily reflection.

For the literati, flower arranging was a moral exercise. To insert a flower was to ask: Which virtue do I wish to embody and carry with me today? By translating this act into a wearable form, the vase turns daily self-cultivation into a portable ritual, allowing the wearer to literally “carry their chosen virtue” wherever they go.

The cut-out window recalls the lattice windows commonly found in traditional scholar’s studios. The patterned window here recreates that atmosphere, offering the wearer a portable fragment of the scholar’s studio. The window plate and the flower plate behind it can be swapped at will, allowing the user to choose which virtue to cultivate each day. In this way, the act of changing the insert becomes part of a daily ritual of reflection.

The receipt records the “purchase” of flowers and their symbolic virtues. By framing moral reflection in the format of a consumer transaction, the work critiques the obsession with consumption. This receipt is not proof of purchase, but proof of reflection: a reminder that self-cultivation is a daily balance sheet of character.
